Back coverage?
So, here's the painting I did for the back cover of Coptopus. The one that was there before was just a placeholder so we could get proofs made.

I like it. It's an evil (but still fun and a little goofy) analogue to the front cover.

Any input?

INPUT, DAMMIT!

Also, Brian and I have been discussing a name for our 'studio'. While I can see the practicality of branding us, as well as making the front cover look complete, I'm also very sensitive to the idea that there are way, way too many indie mini-companies out there that are hastily named and drown before they get more than a few bad issues out. It's almost like a death sentence, this 'name' thing, even if it's traditional. And I'd almost rather have the reader think 'Collin David' and 'Brian Rubin' instead of 'Baconface Studios' or whatever. I've been branded enough over the past few years to be wary of its dangers. Maybe we could drop this one on the world and name ourselves later?

What do you think? We're both pretty undecided at this point. I, for one, need an outside perspective.

Uh.

The only real input I can offer to that is "Holy jesus christ that's amazing."

I love it. Seriously. I love it so much I want to take it out behind the middle school and get it pregnant, to quote Tracy Jordan.

Re: The branding..

Baconface Studios is easily one of the best names ever and I don't think you'd be death sentencing a single thing by going with that.

But in all seriousness, regarding the branding, not being an artist or anything and having 0 experience in the independent branding market, I do understand what you're saying, and I really can't see the harm in just having like "A Collin David & Brian Rubin Production" somewhere on the cover for now.

Gives you time to still focus on getting the work out, and take your time making sure the "brand" you ultimately choose is something you guys like, and you're not going to be sitting there next year going "... Baconface? What the fuck were we thinking?"

Ultimately, the purpose of a brand is to create continuity and recognizability, and there's certainly no problem going forward with just your names, because they will do more or less the same thing, just a little less catchily. I don't know if catchily is a word, and it reminds me of Cat Chili, which would be disgusting.

I hate agreeing with people but I don't need to repeat what has already been said.

I love it! (and not just because I love squid, guns and booze--it's gorgeous)

As far as the name is concerned, I think that "Baconface Studios" is memorable and not bad, although if you want to hold off on picking something you should go with your gut. I don't think that if you pick something that isn't perfect it's going to make or break you, but it's your project so you should just do what you feel like doing. On the plus side if you just put your real names on it and become famous later, your old stuff will be more traceable and more valuable with time :-P

Seriously, 'Baconface Studios' was something I puked out onto LJ as I was typing by way of example of 'LET'S GO WITH A CRAZY NAME NOW!!!!!!'

But it seems to be popular!

PS

I was looking at your profile page to find your website (to look at your other artwork) and realized that you live eerily close to me. For some reason I had this vague notion that you lived on the West Coast or something. What?

TEH NEMESQUID!!1!

LOL @ Baconface Studios. I think you'd get sick of that name before you even printed it on anything. Plus you'd spend a lot of time explaining it. Is your face MADE of bacon? Do you have bacon ON your face?

I agree that you guys ought to just go the "David/Rubin Production" or something like that. Or just "resonantfish.com", which you already know you won't be embarassed to use and/or get tired of quickly.

Cool back cover, tho.

My question would be, Why can't it be both, goddammit? mmm Delicious Self-cannabalism!
